Gambling Addiction Rehabilitation

Gambling for many people is perceived to be a harmless past time. However, it is possible to become addicted to gambling in the same way as some people get addicted to a drug. When a gambler wins a bet, they get a rush, in a similar way to a substance abuser getting high. The danger arises when a gambler chases the feeling they get when they win. With easier access to gambling, including online gambling, addiction is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. It is also possible that gambling addiction may co-exist with other dependencies like alcoholism, which amplifies the problem.

Signs of gambling addiction may include:

  • Pre-occupation – Gamblers get obsessed with their next gambling fix and find it difficult to concentrate on day to day activities like work or study.
  • Increased stakes – Gambling addicts may bet more and more money to achieve the same high that they get from winning.
  • Chasing losses – Gambling addicts will often bet money that they cannot afford, and then lose. They will then bet more and more money to try and get the money back. They will often run up large debts this way.
  • Withdrawal – Many gamblers become irritable when they are unable to gamble. This can lead to increased moodiness and anxiety
