Food Addiction

Here at Cassiobury Court, we help with all forms of food addiction, including binge eating disorder. Many who suffer from food addictions feel a sense of shame, so we pride ourselves on our welcoming approach for our new patients. We aim to remove the stress involved with receiving treatment. For many it is difficult to seek help for behavioural addictions such as food addiction because it does not have the immediate and often catastrophic effects of drug or alcohol addiction.

For many, food is craved in the same way that drugs are craved in a drug addiction. However, because food is not considered to be an addictive substance, many who have cravings will try and control it without help, which is a massive barrier to treatment. This leads to repeated failed attempts to control the eating, which will have long term physical and emotional effects.

Examples of food addiction can include binge eating, yo-yo dieting and emotional eating. The long term effects on your emotional and physical health can be very serious. Repeated failed attempts to control weight or eating patterns can result in shame and loss of self-esteem, which can lead to depression.

Treatment

It is important to combine food planning with counselling to identify any underlying issues that may trigger an unhealthy relationship with food. Leaving these issues unresolved will make recovery very difficult. Treatment will also identify what foods trigger cravings; once these have been identified then the individual can gradually reduce their intake. Treatment is combined with a healthy level of exercise to get fit, which will also reduce cravings.

If you think you might require food addiction treatment or you are worried about someone close to you, call Cassiobury Court on 0800 500 3129 for treatment.
