Crystal Meth Detox

Before crystal meth detox can begin, it is important to understand the effects and risks associated with the drug.

Properties

Methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth, is an amphetamine and has similar effects to cocaine and speed. It usually comes in the form of crystals, although it can also come in tablet or powder form. In its crystal form it is usually smoked, but it can also be snorted or injected in its other forms.

The main effects of the drug make the user very alert and aggressive as well as feeling very aroused. It also lowers the user’s inhibitions, meaning that they will take bigger risks. It is often seen as an alternative to crack, because the effects last a lot longer. Smoking crack can make you feel the effects for anything up to 12 hours, compared with 10 minutes for crack.

Risks

There are many risks associated with taking crystal meth. These can include:

  • Psychosis – Users often develop psychosis, where they lose track of reality and may believe things that are not true
  • Overdose – crystal meth use can result in damage to the lungs and kidneys as well as causing strokes. This can lead to coma and death.
  • Brain damage – there is evidence that prolonged use of crystal meth can damage the brain, although users can gradually recover with abstinence.
  • Reduced inhibitions – Users may take part in risky activities, which can result in injury. With the combined effect of arousal, users will often have unsafe sex.
